Description: Except for Michael Ponti's 1974 recording of the second (an exciting but reckless-seeming carouse which cuts almost 2:30 off of the 20 minute timing for this recording), Hiller's concerti have never been recorded. Dating from 1829-31, 1843 and 1874, they are in the conservative Chopin-Schumann tradition and, while full of the necessary brilliant display opportunities, never sink to trivial or superfical note-spinning. The wealth of detailed expressive markings in the Third (both for the soloist and in the orchestral parts) vouch for the intention behind the Concerto espressivo subtitle. Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra; Howard Shelley (piano).
