Description: Kaprálová studied with Vítezslav Novák, and was also a pupil - and apparently rather more than that - of Martinu. These are some of her earliest works - the Opp. 1 and 3 date from 1932 and the sonata from a year later. They are accomplished and spontaneous, if not especially individual but reflecting the heritage of her native Bohemia (she wrote them while at the Brno Conservatory). The other works of a mere several years later - from 1937-39 - when the relationship with and influence of Martinu was in full effect, show far greater emotional range. As Martinu himself put it in 1947, "...rarely have I had the opportunity to encounter such genuine talent and such confidence in the task she wanted to - and was to - accomplish..." Virginia Eskin (piano), Stephanie Chase (violin).
