Description: Throughout these chamber works, Fukushi employs western instruments in largely conventional techniques. Bending of pitches in his woodwind writing, especially the evocative and meditative work for solo flute, provides the only real suggestion of traditional Japanese music in his idiom. The delicate, luminous textures of much of the chamber music may suggest Takemitsu, while the solo piano work especially, as well as the piano part in 'Syun-Rin' definitely suggests the influence of Messiaen, with whom Fukushi briefly studied. While remaining some distance from conventional tonality, these modern post-impressionistic landscapes are attractive and readily accessible. Yoshiko Shibuya (piano), Ayako Shinozaki (harp), Hiroshi Koizumi (alto flute), Ensemble Nomad; Norio Sato.
