Description: Gandolfi's music is basically tonal, though as in Points of Departure, a dodecaphonic work, this may be heard in a somewhat expanded sense, though the tonal harmonic centers are well established. There is something of late Stravinsky in Gandolfi's clearly delineated, wide-ranging melodic lines, though his eclecticism is his own. Themes is a suite derived from incidental music for a Shakespeare production, and is lively and varied, much more tonal than Points. Y2K is a brightly humorous work, tongue in cheek and thoroughly enjoyable. Written as the Y2K catastrophe was threatened and never happened, the work 'short-circuits' little repeated fragments through the sudden omission of a beat, or suggests 'orchestral' synthesizer sounds approximated by an orchestra, with a certain mechanical quality invoked by process methods in the last movement.
