Description: The beautiful Concerto dell'estate (1928) is considered Pizzetti's masterpiece and hasn't had a recording in 40 years. A 30-minute portrait of a summer day in three movements, it has a lushly sensuous quality, revelling in the joys of nature in its first two movements Mattutino and Notturno, lucidly yet richly scored for a large orchestra while the finale, Gagliarda e Finale introduces neoclassical elements. The symphonic preludes to "Oedipus the King" (1904) are mood pictures portraying a somber, forboding atmosphere while the ominous prelude to the 1964 opera Clitennestra shows us that Pizzetti also wrote film scores and the "Feast of the Pan-Athenaia" (1936) uses ancient modality to suggest the world of ancient Greece. * - First recordings.
