GEORG JOSEPH VOGLER (1749-1814): Symphonies in D Minor and in G, Overtures to the stage works Athalie, Hamlet and Erwin und Elmire, Ballet Suites Nos. 1 & 2.
Catalogue Number: 05K042
Description: The D minor symphony is a three-movement, 19-minute work written for Paris in 1782 which tempers the heat and tension of Rigel above with a German phlegmatic manner which produces a very satsifying hybrid. The other symphony, from Mannheim in 1779, is a nine-minute, one-movement work of quirky formal design. The Hamlet overture is 11 minutes - almost a tone-poem while the other two are half its length or less. The charming ballet suites were excerpted in the 1950s from several Vogler works London Mozart Players; Matthias Bamert.
