KAI NIEMINEN (b.1953): Palomar for Flute and Orchestra, Through Shadows I Can Hear Ancient Voices for Clarinet and Orchestra, Alleys in Twilight.
Catalogue Number: 05K097
Description: These pieces are freely fantastic in form, and display a kind of painterly neo-impressionism in idiom, full of nature images and the evocation of sounds of nature, light and shadow (the subtitles of the movements suggest the latter predominantly, but the sparkling timbre of the flute and crystalline orchestration brings lightness of texture to these nocturnal scenes). A firm foundation in tonality and a concern for lyricism counterbalances some innovative (not really 'extended') clarinet writing and the soloist's improvised cadenzas. The mysterious Alleys is a quasi-narrative tone poem evoking winding alleys in Rome and their various inhabitants. Mikko Raasakka (clarinet), Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä; Patrick Gallois (flute).
