Description: Although Commedia, a 1971 commission from the then-new St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and tailored to fit its "almost 18th-century orchestra" size, is Bolcom's most-performed work (over 1000 performances), there is no other recording than this one, getting every ounce of vim and vigour from the piece's inspiration in Italian commedia dell'arte. 1981's Ragomania, a Boston Pops commission and the 1991 concerto both deal in the American popular music Bolcom knows and loves so well. Fischer, a jazz pianist, composer and arranger, based his 1985 concertante work on melodies by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Richard Stoltzman (clarinet), The Lancaster Festival Orchestra; Gary Sheldon.
