Description: Ashton lived in Germany from the age of four until 1885, studying composition with Jadassohn, Reinecke and Raff, and remained a composer of 19th century German Romanticism for the rest of his life. Grove mentions 24 piano sonatas in all major and minor keys but we are going to get only eight, apparently because the other 16 were never published and were lost with his 24 string quartets, five symphonies and God knows what else in a December 1940 air-raid conflagration. Detailed notes on the quirks both musical and personal of this prolific conservative make for interesting reading and anyone who loves romantic piano music will want this release especially since, although grounded in German Romanticism, Ashton's music never "sounds like" anyone more famous. 2 CDs for the price of 1. Leslie De'Ath (piano).
