HANS GÁL (1890-1987): Violin Sonatas in B Flat Minor, Op. 17 and in D, op. posth., Suite in G, Op. 56.
Catalogue Number: 05L084
Description: The op. 17 sonata dates from 1920 and has a striking rhapsodic opening movement, an eerie second movement scherzo with a cantabile center and a molto espresivo adagio finale. The other sonata is from 1933, composed during the summer after his dismissal from his teaching post in Mainz. Amazingly, there are no intimations of danger or trouble in this predominantly warm and lyrical work. The 12-minute suite (1935) was originally written for mandolin and piano; lighter than the sonatas, it has a classical clarity of structure and texture and even a certain playfulness. Annette-Barbara Vogel (violin), Juhani Lagerspetz (piano).
