Description: The description of Cooke as the "English Hindemith" takes into account the clean lines, uncluttered part-writing, flowing textures and propensity toward fugal writing of that German composer but leave out an innate English lyricism (and sense of humor, as in the jaunty, hunting Rondo for horn and piano) and, in the flute quartet (1936) and first piano sonata (1938), even Debussian fingerprints. The note-writer compares Cooke to Rubbra in the timeless, unsensational and profound quality of their music and the slow movements of both piano sonatas are good examples of this idea. No texts. Raphael Terroni (piano), Melanie Lodge (soprano), Jonathan Jaggard (horn), Lorraine Schulman (clarinet).
