Description: The First is a tautly argued work in a single span, divided into two main sections. Tonally based, though admitting ample dissonance, the work accumulates tension, releases it in sustained lyrical sections, then disrupts these with a return to the previous mood. The Second is more tonal, especially the second movement Jazz Play , an homage to the composer's earlier performing career, which repeatedly returns to a jazzlike walking bassline which adds an appealing vernacular element to the language. The material is derived from the austere and tense first movement. The Third goes considerably further in the direction of tonality, with sophisticated but instantly approachable references to dances - a tango, a samba - in the first movement, and to country fiddling in the raucous finale. The central Lament pays tribute to early 20th-century quartet writing, lyrical but melancholy and troubled. Alexander String Quartet.
