Description: Shchedrin calls The Enchanted Wanderer, a narrative religious work for soloists, chorus and orchestra, "an opera for the concert stage". The work derives from a tale by Nikolai Leskov that goes in search of theological compleities by means of discursive balladic simplicity and the composer aims to replicate the complexity-in-simplicity of its subject matter, using a mixture of Orthodox-like choral writing with folk effects. Russian (Cyrillic)-English texts. 2 CDs. Sergei Aleksashkin (bass), Evgeny Akimov (tenor), Kristina Kapustinskaya (mezzo), Mariinsky Orchestra and Chorus; Valery Gergiev. SACD hybrid
