GEOFFREY BURGON (b.1941): Viola Concerto "Ghosts of the Dance", Cello Concerto, Merciless Beauty for Mezzo-Soprano and Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 05L103
Description: Known for his 80s scores to Brideshead Revisited and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Burgon here offers two concerted pieces which straddle the line with film/light music. Ghosts is inflected by the smooth American dance music of the 30s and 40s in its outer movements with a languid, tango-like central one while Burgon himself suggests that the 2007 cello concerto's soloist is a protagonist in a film noir, the orchestral accompaniment all dark and moody with only one flute and oboe and making evocative use of contrabassoon, bass clarinet and the low registers of marimba and harp. Texts included. Philip Dukes (viola), Josephine Knight (cello), Sarah Connolly (mezzo), City of London Sinfonia; Rumon Gamba.
