WILLIAM ALWYN (1905-1985): Violin Concerto, Miss Julie Suite (arr. Philip Lane [b.1950]), Fanfare for a Joyful Occasion.
Catalogue Number: 05M010
Description: This 1937-39 concerto must be the finest never-performed English violin concerto of the 20th century. Romantic and rhapsodic, with free-flowing melodic ideas and some bravura passagework, it often sounds a bit like film music (which Alwyn was also good at composing) in its vivid colorfulness, its first performance was the 1993 Chandos recording and it apparently has still never been performed professionally. New to CD is the 17-minute suite of dramatic and powerful music from Alwyn's Strindberg opera (1973-76) which Mary Alwyn commissioned from Philip Lane in 2000. Lorraine McAslan (violin), Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; David Lloyd-Jones.
