Description: As a friend of Carl Nielsen and teacher of Vagn Holmboe, one could see Høffding as the link between the two composers. This is borne out particularly in the two works here which he called "symphonic fantasies" (1939 and 1943) and which, in their focus on organic melodic growth from simple initial themes, seem to prefigure Holmboe's "metamorphosis technique" of composition. They're also awfully compelling, gaining momentum as the minutes tick by, and seeming to take on a teeming, vibrant life of their own. Ten minutes and fourteen minutes seem just about right for what happens in them to happen and end satsifyingly. Much of the driving momentum of these scores is also present in the 1928 symphony, a 35-minute work in four movements which plainly is part of the neo-classical New Objectivity associated with Hindemith. Make no mistake - this is gripping, powerful stuff and you'll probably find yourself replaying the entire disc shortly after you're done with it. Jena Philharmonic Orchestra; Frank Cramer.
