VELI-MATTI PUUMALA (b.1965): Chainsprings for Orchestra, Seeds of Time for Piano and Orchestra.

Description: Chainsprings presents a kaleidoscopic spectrum of orchestral virtuosity, spanning a remarkable range of stylistic diversity. An initially tumultuous opening passage is sonorously thrilling, but seems composed of such fragmentary shards or splinters that the overall effect is both atonal and somewhat overwhelming. Gradually, over the span of clearly delineated sections, further arranged into groups and subgroups, longer spans of more cohesive music emerge, each exploring a particular aspect of the original material - spectralist sonorities, lively folk-rhythms, the intersection of gamelan music and minimalism, and the impressive landscape of the Nordic orchestral tradition. Seeds also begins with fragmentary musical motifs - seeds - though presented sequentially, not simultaneously. The word 'time' in the title refers to different periods in musical history, - the jazz age, Romanticism, modern sonorism, mediæval organum - and also to the perceived motion of the music, rhythmically vigorous (and sometimes explicitly measured out by the ticking and chiming of imaginary clocks) or suspended and nocturnal. The soloist, and other solo groups within the orchestra, weaves in and out of the ensemble texture, taking on many different roles and characters as the piece progresses.
