Description: The horn has a history in Czech music almost as long as the history of instrumental music itself. This recital by the latest in a fine line of Czech horn players (Vojta turns 30 this year) offers music from the mid 20th century, almost all of it melodic, the most "modern" being Slavicky's Musica (1988) which uses some extended playing techinques but which is not what you'd think of as "avant-garde". The most remarkable is the lyrical, relaxed, late Romantic sonata by Hlobil, yet another example of beautifully unruffled music coming out of a very bad historical period - 1942: the year Reinhard Heydrich was asassinated in Prague, leading to the mass murder of more than 1000 Czechs a week later at Lidice. Premysl Vojta (horn), Tomoko Sawano (piano).
