NINO ROTA (1911-1979): Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, Improvviso in D Minor for Violin and Piano, Toccata for Bassoon and Piano, Clarinet Sonata in D, Fantasia in G for Piano.
Catalogue Number: 05O068
Description: Although they have several other recordings already, the most striking pieces here are the 1945 clarinet sonata, which seems to indicate the beaten, lethargic spirits of the war-ravaged Italian people with only a slightly happier atmosphere in its finale, and the 1947 Improviso, whose rampaging emotions derive from its origin in the film score for a movie based on Tolstoy's "Kreutzer Sonata". Now we can add the only CD recording available of the 15-minute piano Fantasia (1944-45) whose tense and melancholy mood goes hand-in-hand with the last months of the war in Italy. The motoric, neo-classical trio and Toccata, from the mid 70s, are from a different world. Goran Gojevic (clarinet), Mary Kenedi (piano), Lynn Kuo (violin), Winona Zelenka (cello), Michael Sweeney (bassoon).
