FÉLICIEN DAVID (1810-1876): Lalla Roukh.
Catalogue Number: 05P008
Description: The epitome of French Orientalist music and the high point of David's career, this opéra-comique (1862) has been little more than an exotic name and an encyclopedia entry for a century. Now we finally get to hear it (and on period instruments too!) and it's no disappointment. An adaptation of a work (part prose, part poem) by Irishman Thomas Moore about an Indian princess' journey to Bukhara where she will marry a king, there is plenty of "oriental" color in the music but it is by no means omnipresent; there are many delightful scenes which might have been found in works by contemporaries such as Auber or Offenbach. 2 CDs. Libretto and translation available on-line. Marianne Fiset, Nathalie Paulin (sopranos), Emiliano Gonzalez Toro (tenor), Bernard Deletré (bass-baritone), Opera Lafayette; Ryan Brown.
