Description: The third Toch disc from these Berlin-based artists brings us his early, 1913 violin sonata, the last work of his early period, derived from Brahms via Reger; the cello sonata and Divertimento come from the mid and late 1920s where expression is compressed but still not avant-garde in any way; the string trio, a 27-minute work written in Hollywood in 1936 is the uncompromising, abrasive and rather bitter work of an exile unappreciated in his new country while the meltingly sad Adagio is a brief, heartfelt commemoration from 1950 of his many relatives and friends who perished in the Holocaust.
