Description: The 18-year-old Hurlstone's sonata (first recorded for CD in late 2010 - 10M014) in which influences from Chopin, Schumann and Brahms are transmuted through an already original handling of tonality and harmonic progressions to produce a late Romantic work of great promise is the only item on this disc previously recorded. That means 50 minutes of mostly "juvenilia" - the Waltzes are the work of a nine-year-old - but Hurlstone was a prodigy in more ways than just a pianist. Summoned from the RCM to hear the boy play, George Grove was even more impressed by the child's "grasp" of the subject than of his abilities as a player, meaning that nothing here sounds like it was not composed by a gifted adult. Kenji Fujimura (piano).
