IANNIS XENAKIS (1922-2001): The Piano Works - Herma, Evryali, Mists, A R., 6 Chansons, 3 unpublished pieces (L. 1, Air populaire and Allegro molto), Zyia for Soprano, Flute and Piano.
Catalogue Number: 05Q068
Description: Xenakis' solo piano pieces are not frequently recorded and I can only think of an early 2000s Mode recording of most of those recorded here. The volcanic energy of Evryali and Herma are the direct opposite of the Greek folk-influenced early Chansons from 1951 while Zyia, from the following year and not performed at all until 2000, also has its source in Greek folk music. There are also here three unpublished pieces totalling just under three minutes from 1949 (not claimed as premieres but I'm not aware of other recordings of them) when Xenakis was studying with Milhaud and Honegger, two of which are quite Bartókian. Stéphanos Thomopoulos (piano), Raquel Camarhina (soprano), Matteo Cesari (flute).
