Catalogue Number: 05Q078
Description: This husband-and-wife duo shared composition of the 2009 four-movement symphony whose subtitle refers to an incident in China which led to the First Opium War with Great Britain. Plenty of opportunity happily taken for weaving Guangdong folk melodies into its first movement and depicting the struggle against opium smuggling, the humiliation of the Chinese people and the preservation of national dignity post-war using the mix of Romanticism and Impressionism familiar to collectors of these composers. The 11-minute Rhyme (2003) uses a large percussion section to evoke the drumming tradition that grew out of Buddhist doctrines and survives today in Japanese taiko drumming. The 17-minute Enlightened evokes ancient Chinese philosophy teachings which direct one to physical, mental and spiritual well-being. New Zealand Symphony Orchestra; Darrell Ang.
