Description: Not only is some of the repertoire here rare (Varèse!, the single-named Poldowski - who turns out to be Régine Wieniawski, the daughter of the violinist and composer - Szulc, Trenet) but we have the foremost French countertenor of the day performing it (with his own note explaining why). A few chansons are mixed in with the traditional genre of the mélodie as well. Instrumentally to vary the effect, ten of these songs use piano and string quartet and two string quartet, all but one of which (the Canteloube) are arrangements by the pianist. Good, compact notes and readable texts and translations make this budget-priced brand-new release a remarkable value. 2 CDs. French-English texts. Philippe Jaroussky (countertenor), Nathalie Stutzmann (contralto - Massenet La lune blanche), Jérôme Ducros (piano), Quatuor Ebène.
