TIBOR HARSÁNYI (1898-1954): Violin Sonata, Viola Sonata, Sonatina for Violin and Piano, 3 pièces de danse for Piano.
Catalogue Number: 05R007
Description: Part of the group, along with Martinu, Mihalovici, Conrad Beck, Tansman and Tcherepnin, dubbed “l’école de Paris”, Harsányi’s music shares with his fellows an interest in jazz and other American-sourced popular music (the 1928 pièces de danse), the spare and dissonant textures of neo-classicism (especially in the Bartókian violin sonata of 1926) and a certain amount of folk color, Hungarian in his case. While the 1918 Sonatina still shows Harsányi’s Romantic roots, his last work, the viola sonata from 1953-54 is a sensuous and earthy distillation of the earlier pieces. Charles Wetherbee (violin, viola), David Korevaar (piano).
