Description: Despite a career spanning five decades, Lotti is best-known for his eight-part setting of the Crucifixus. This famous motet is part of a complete Credo setting, itself part of the Missa Sancti Christophori that is recorded here for the first time. Expense and extravagance were not spared for music written for the Basilica of San Marco in Venice and Lotti upped the scale of his forces in music that contains much variety, incessant invention and a refusal to conform to tradition, pointing ahead to the galant style of the early Classical period. The Syred Consort, Orchestra of St. Paul’s; Ben Palmer.
