Description: Mendelssohn’s reclamation of Handel’s oratorio and its transformation into an early Romantic sound world was first performed in 1833 and was the most often played of such Handel and Bach “updatings”. So, some parts are cut because Mendelssohn was using amateur soloists, the organ continuo part was redone for a pair of clarinets because the hall had no organ and various other touches of Romantic orchestral color are added here and there; Mendelssohn’s 1826 Trumpet Overture, slightly modified, is used as the overture to the oratorio. 2 CDs for the price of 1.
