Description: Telemann had to produce lots of celebratory oratorios and serenatas for the annual feast of Hamburg’s “town captains” but CPE only needed to do it twice. This pair dates from 1780 and Bach lets his hair down for the unsophisticated audience with easily appreciated melodies driven home rythmically (no learned counterpoint required here!) and a wonderful noise made by trumpets, horns and timpani in the 40-minute oratorio Hebt an and trumpets, drum and fife in the 22-minute serenata. Particular fun is had in the depictions of bloody wars and revolutions which Hamburg is never going to have since they’re such a together city (so never stop being that way, men!) but here’s what they’d sound like if they did happen...
