Description: Nelle ore is an 1829 penitential cantata describing the sorrows of Mary during Christ’s Passion, an early example of a genre that was popular especially in the countryside throughout the 19th century. Monti’s style is based in the Naples of the 18th century but there are also surprisingly forward-looking rhetorial elements also. The much more conservative Miserere of 1799 is an example of a genre passed down orally for centuries to be performed during a Good Friday procession; Monti’s exists only in late copies, itself having become part of oral tradition in his native town of Penne. De bon parole; Marco Giacintucci.
