Description: A valuable collection of female composers from various countries, some well represented in catalogues today (no need to say anything about Beach, Bacewicz and Tailleferre) but with two Swedish ones no one is likely to have encountered before: Aulin was the sister of composer Tor Aulin and her two salon pieces are notable for their exquisite and refined harmonies while Almén, though having studied composition and the piano with renowned names, chose to spend much of her life teaching children and composing very little; this 17-minute sonata was published in 1919 and wraps two strong-willed (dare I say “masculine”?) outer movements around a brief, tranquil andante and a laid-back, unruffled tempo di minuetto. Kaprálová’s 1937 etudes, dedicated to Rudolf Firkusny, are rooted in Czech folk music. Bengt Forsberg (piano).
