Description: Some contemporaries considered Eberl and Beethoven as the two top composers for piano of their day and this 1805 concerto comes from the same period as his E flat symphony which most critics preferred to Beethoven’s Eroica. It sounds somewhere between Mozart and younger Beethoven but Eberl’s most unusual traits on view here are formal and harmonic and the notes are excellent on them. The sonatas date from 1797 and were written for students who were obviously pretty advanced. Paolo Giacometti, Riko Fukuda (fortepianos), Kölner Akademie; Michael Alexander Willens.
