Description: The concerto, written between 1917 and 1922, is a rhapsodic work lasting over half an hour. While some sections sound like middle-period Sibelius, the specifically Nordic moments of the work are relatively few as Atterberg's eclecticism provides a veritable grab-bag of styles current in northern European musical thought at the beginning of this century. (The only previous CD recording of this work was on the now-defunct KOCH Schwann label.) The conscientious and respectful Brahms arrangement for string orchestra comes from 1939, a time when Atterberg was much concerned with defending the virtues of the classical tradition against the inroads of the then avant-garde. Truls Mørk (cello), Symphony Orchestra of Norrlands Operan; Kristjan Järvi.
