Description: Using imperfect and incomplete sources, having to substitute no longer existing instruments and having to alter vocal parts to suit the available singers, Schumann managed to stage much (but not all) of Bach's "other", "shorter" Passion in 1851. Much of his stylistic efforts were based on Mendelssohn's Bach scholarship but he also corresponded with the Kantor of the Thomanerchor of the time, Moritz Hauptmann, who had access to what orchestral score material there was. An interesting milestone in the history of Bach performance scholarship. 2 CDs. German-English texts. Veronika Winter, Elisabeth Scholl (sopranos), Gerhild Romberger (alto), Jan Kobow (tenor), Ekkehard Abele, Clemens Heidrich (basses), Rheinische Kantorei, Das Kleine Konzert; Hermann Max.
