JOHN IRELAND (1879-1962): Legend for Piano and Orchestra, Piano Concerto, These Things Shall Be for Baritone, Chorus and Orchestra, Overture "Satyricon", Two Symphonic Studies (arr. Geoffrey Bush [1920-1998]).
Catalogue Number: 06I063
Description: Some lesser-known Ireland here in recordings from 1966, 1968 and 1971: Satyricon (1946) is another sparkling example of the genre of the "comedy overture", These Things Shall Be a remarkable effusion of optimism (in 1937 too!) from a generally pessimistic composer while the Studies are two more pieces lifted from the film score The Overlanders and which stand better on their own as they are of greater length and, Prelude and Fugue as they are, of more serious purpose as well. Eric Parkin (piano), John Carol Case (baritone), London Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra; Sir Adrian Boult.
