FRANK BRIDGE (1879-1941): Piano Music, Vol. 2 - Sonata, Lament for Catherine, 3 Improvisations for the Left Hand, 3 Sketches, Moderato, Pensées fugitives I: Andante moderato, Scherzettino: Prestissimo.
Catalogue Number: 06I085
Description: The disconnect between Bridge's early, quasi-Delian late Romantic style and his late style is very easily heard in this collection. The well-known Sketches (1906) and the last three items listed above (from 1902-03 and unpublished until after his death) are firmly in late Romantic salon-style. The dissonance of the sonata's densely chromatic harmonies and its effect on critics of the day is well-known by now so it's good to also have the short Lament (1915) for a child drowned when the Lusitania was torpedoed, and the Improvisations (1918), written for a pianist who lost his right arm during the war, which date from the period and the cause of Bridge's soon-to-evolve late style. Ashley Wass (piano).
