Description: Zilcher's early four lieder are in a traditional form and style with the piano mostly paralleling the vocal line. The subject, as so often with this genre, is love in all its aspects but the later Eichendorff cycle shows a more advanced harmonic language while the piano part becomes emancipated from the voice and the declamation stylistically approaches that of Wolf. The settings of illustrated German children's fables belong in the same genre, say, as Reger's Schlichte Weisen. German-English texts. Konrad Jarnot (baritone), Alexander Schmalcz (piano).
