Description: Both Berkeley pieces, the 1943 Sonatina and the 1955 sextet, have the distinctive Gallic clarity, grace and elegance which stem from his studies with Nadia Boulanger and general affinity to French culture. The Rawsthorne, from 1946, is a lyrical work, strong in melody, but with an underlying toughness too. The Bush pieces are short, approachable, often attractively melodic and atmospheric (the Concert Studies appeared in December 2002 on Meridian), miles from his serious music which is still generally neglected, but good to have on disc all the same. Original 1974 LP releases.
