Description: Inspired by the famous Schubert Centennial Competition of 1927 (on the advisory committee on which Weingartner sat, preventing him from competing), the Sixth is based on Schubert's Unfinished in letter and in spirit. The opening movement is a funeral march which contains melodic fragments of the work as well as nods to Mahler and Wagner while the second movement scherzo is Weingartner's completion of the actual Schubert fragment (since completed by Brian Newbould) while the following Adagio and final Vivace continue the mood (very C major Ninth in grandeur and majesty), the latter a tarantella-type which includes fragments from the Death and the Maiden quartet and the late C minor piano sonata. The coupling is a 19-minute "Symphonic Poem in the Form of Variations" from 1931, masterful in its construction and ingenious in its orchestration. Basel Symphony Orchestra; Marko Letonja. SACD hybrid
