Description: Reconstructed from various sources (including the 1934 film's soundtrack), The Girlfriends is a new, 46-minute Shostakovich film score all collectors of the composer and of this genre will want. Its 23 tracks include all kinds of instrumentation from full orchestra (only the finale) to one for solo theremin. Lasting nine and eleven minutes, the next two items are incidental music for stage plays, the latter (for a 1936 play set in the Spanish Civil War) commanded by the government when Shostakovich was in the official doghouse. Even more interesting than these is the six-and-a-half minute movement which was originally going to be the first movement of the Ninth Symphony. What's here has nothing to do with the Ninth as we know it although it does have a theme the composer later used in similar guise as the second theme of the first movement of the Tenth Symphony and another theme which Galina Ustvolskaya used in her 1949 clarinet trio. Celia Sheen (theremin), Kamil Barczewski (bass), Camerata Silesia, Polish National Radio Symphony; Mark Fitz-Gerald.
