Description: Walker's succinctly discursive sonata uses recurring thematic material of contrasting character across its two-movement form to give an impression of a loose but cohesive sonata-form-like structure to its tautly argued form. Gardner's solo sonata is rhapsodic, also fundamentally tonal and makes the most of the viola's rich tone-color, while his suite presents five lively contrasting dialogues between violin and viola, stately, energetic, tinged with a bluesy melancholy. Colgrass, a percussionist-composer, pairs the viola with a set of small tuned tom-toms in a set of five ingenious variations which conjure some unexpected expressive potential from this unlikely combination, again in an attractive tonal context. Juliet White-Smith (viola), Heidi Brende (piano), Richard Fuchs (violin), Michael Smith (percussion).
