Description: True Glass aficionados and completists have been regarding this recording, of the 1985 world premiere performance, as something of a collector's Holy Grail. Some sort of contractual dispute kept it unavailable except as bootlegs allegedly circulated by Moran's aggrieved fans. Ah, such is the behind-the-scenes drama and intrigue of the world of contemporary music! Now it's here we can all hear a typical Glass score of the 1980s, his best relentless arpeggio period, with Moran's contribution skilfully dovetailed into the style, but noticeably different - more varied in texture and (pointedly?) based on different repeated patterns from Glass' when composed using process techniques. The story is the brothers Grimm's familiar, rather gruesome tale with its whimsically recounted murder, cannibalism and supernatural retribution. If you're into Glass' music of the time this is an appealing example, lent added variety within a consistent framework by the unusual collaboration. Libretto included. Jayne West (soprano), Sanford Sylvan (baritone), Juniper Tree Opera Orchestra; Richard Pittmann.
