Description: This beautiful and serene recital of contemporary sacred choral music centers on commissions by The Genesis Foundation intended to reinforce and extend the tradition of sacred polyphony in the Catholic church. MacMillan's radiant setting of his abbreviation of Padre Pio's lengthy prayer, with subtle whispers of Messiaen-like organ accompaniment sets the tone for the disc, tonal, meditative, with the quiet dissonances of the Renaissance. Roxanna Panufnik's setting, and her unaccompanied "Prayer" are harmonically rich, in a tonal language plainly related to that of her father. Will Todd's version is simple and affecting, while his atmospheric 'Among Angels' incorporates more sophisticated choral techniques as a background to a lyrical, songful statement of the text, by Ben Dunwell, who also provided the paraphrase of Padre Pio's prayer set by Todd. Sung texts and the full text of Padre Pio's Prayer included. The Sixteen; Harry Christophers.
