Description: Harvey's limited output for the piano nevertheless remains entirely characteristic of the composer, with an emphasis on expanded tone colour (sometimes incorporating electronic transformations or preparation of the piano (the latter appropriately enough in the homage to Cage), and sometimes not). The early Four Images consists of three brief, pointillistic and serial movements and the much larger Purgatory, which contains embedded quotations from classical and romantic works in an otherwise resolutely post-serial context of extreme dissonance and atonality. The two works with flute contain potent images of destruction and natural force, Run before Lightning especially effective in its imagery, Nataraja (or Shiva) ending with a sense of rebirth or creation after the destructive cataclysm of the opening gestures. Pirmin Grehl (flute), Florian Hoelscher (piano).
