Description: Collectors will know Rajter as the first conductor to produce a Franz Schmidt symphony cycle on the Slovak label Opus in the 1980s. He also studied with Schmidt and, later, from 1930-32, with Dohnanyi. The first two works here date from the latter period (1932 and 1933) and both dwell in that multi-cultural musical territory inhabited by Dvorák, Suk, Bartók, Dohnanyi and Schmidt among others. Rajter's muse was orchestral but not symphonic, thus the suite-form of everything here (even 1995's Impressioni, at just over seven minutes in one movement, is a mini-suite, as new ideas appear, are briefly developed, and give way to new ones). Rajter's style did not change between these early works (and the colorful, late-Romantic ballet suite which is from 1938) and the 1993 Sinfonietta and the later Impressioni, although it got more concentrated. This highly communicative, attractively orchestrated music will appeal to anyone who collects any of the composers listed above or, for that matter, Moyzes or Cikker, Rajter's Slovak compatriots. Janácek Philharmonic Orchestra; David Porcelijn.
