Description: In 1759, Telemann set two sections of texts from Klopstock's massive hexameter poem "The Messiah", the first French in style with its mixed recitatives and ariosi and dance movements, the second more Italian in its cantabile lyricism. These last some 33 minutes; the other half of this program is a 39-minute consecration cantata which, fascinatingly, recalling his major Donnerode of the same year, incorporates a reference to the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. German texts. English synopses. Susanne Borchert-Rohwedder (soprano), Gabriele Künzler (alto), Holger Off (tenor), Eckhard Trox (baritone), Vocal Ensemble of Rellinger Kantorei, Salzburg Soloists, Members of the Hamburg State Philharmonic; Wolfgang Zilcher. Original 1989 release.
