Description: This is the most impressive release of high octane, heaven-storming Romantic piano music in years. The Op. 2, masquerading under a generic, Schumannian name, is a 47-minute cycle of contention, struggle and swagger, reminding one of the Florestan character of Schumann's early piano pieces while the Morceaux, equally misleadingly titled, are a 32-minute set of virtuosic knuckle-busters which recall the combative, striving, ever-upwards against all odds character of some of Liszt's symphonic poems. Urspruch recalls visiting Liszt daily in 1871 and playing with him for six straight hours one time: "He liked my compositions exceptionally well and embraced and kissed me tempestuously again and again - he likes me just as much as a pianist." Now you'll know why. 2 CDs. Ana-Marija Markovina (piano).
