Description: Gervasoni's Metà della ripa is an elaboration of a chamber work from a few years earlier, in which the composer similarly explores very subtle variations in intonation between different instrumental groups, especially in their highest register. The work is thus variably and minutely microtonal, and although a large orchestra (with much percussion) is specified, the music whispers and whistles its way through much of its duration, with a certain coloristic delicacy and a lack of demonstrative expression. Manzoni's Ode by contrast, is a more dramatic piece with a sense of lyrical flow, for all its complexity. Five distinct 'streams' of material, metrically and timbrally diverse, proceed in parallel, with occasional convergences that provide 'milestones' along the way. Sembiati, a much more recent composition, is less structurally complex than Ode with episodes - each one based on a musical transliteration of the names of friends, colleagues or acquaintances of the composer - following one another sequentially. Manzoni's language remains atonal and highly dissonant, of course, but there is certainly a perceptible shift toward greater harmonic warmth in the later work.
