Description: Daugherty is at it again, using better- or less-known corners of the United States as inspiration. Here's it's a tiny African-American village just southwest of Selma in Alabama founded as a cotton plantation in 1816 and lately famous for its brightly colored, fine-art quality quilts which provide the composer with the opportunity to make a "musical quilt" out of his usual sources: rock music, blues, spirituals and other types of Southern folk music. For those of you who missed the premiere recording of the Elmer Bernstein back in 2000 (Christopher Parkening on EMI), here it is again: a late work from 1999 commissioned by the guitarist and flogged along by another well-known Christopher who was associated with film music - Parker. Spanish elements (not surprisingly in this genre) underlay the gorgeous and opulent orchestration redolent of Bernstein's western film scores. Thorsten Drücker (guitar), Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra; Rasmus Baumann.
