Description: Much of this recording consists of little pieces of larger works - all of them from music for either the stage, screen or TV (except for the Formations suite, written for the University of Florida marching band in 1964). The most connected is the Concerto grosso, a 19-minute, four-movement piece taken from a Balanchine commission which the choreographer never completed. Gould described it as "a transformation of hoedown tunes" but its application of dissonance, rhythmic asymmetries and rapid and surprising shifts of harmony make it an interesting combination of folklore and modernity. Seattle Symphony; Gerard Schwarz. Original 1995 Delos release.
